Sokoban Sadness
Vocalist's challenge writeup
Life is chaos, life is unkind. But we're asked to try, try again. Sokoban Sadness is a reflection on the challenges of existing, the bizarre hurdles along the way, the perfect plans that fail, and the people who prey on the desperate. This is all done through the lens of 1987 MS-DOS game Nethack. "On your way to the Oracle, you better make sure your wallet's full." Death or a promised ascension: These are your only ways out of the Mazes of Menace.
Producer's challenge writeup
This challenge was a really fun one. I was struggling with what to sample for the challenge and then my washing machine finished. It plays a little jingle whenever it's done. I immediately recorded the jingle and decided to pass it through Serum 2 and make an instrument for it. It is featured on the choruses and in the outro towards the back end. For the rest of the beat, I decided to go for something a little slower to challenge myself, as I normally go for a higher BPM, but I think I found a nice flow for everything with this track. As a pretty new producer, I really enjoy the challenges presented with working directly with a vocalist for this as that isn't something I've really done at this point. Looking forward to seeing how the results play out with this one.
Lyrics
Get up and try, get up and try Just another run then a day goes by Elbereth in the dust, hush, settle all the voices outside it's too much and I cannot abide, still a voice is saying Get up and try, get up and try Just another run then a day goes by Dippin' horns into potions and fluids never look back, take a sip, then i move on and push through it I fail even when I'm taking it slow There's not a lichen or a gnome lord That'll leave me alone It's like some thorn in my At Sign So sad it's siphoning tears The desperation builds While I'm countin' the years yeah I scribble runes in the dirt I trigger trap doors Fell into a hole in the floor I punched a unicorn! I take a breath, thoughts buzz in my mind Now I'm surrounded by bees Let me rewind, you see I'm Stressed I'm encumbered I'm outnumbered, at best Out of charges on the platinum yendorian express Yes, salvation lies on the road to gehennom Dodging darts dipped in venom Oops! I didn't. Now I'm dead and I can rest! Nah - I'm never done with the quest Every day's a new beginning Every day's another test Thoth, I'm callin it quits I can't stand this, it's all a weight If you can hear me then i #pray you relate Cuz I Get up and try, get up and try Just another run then a day goes by Elbereth in the dust, hush, settle all the voices outside It's too much and I cannot abide, still a voice is saying Get up and try, get up and try Just another run then a day goes by Dippin' horns into potions and fluids Never look back, take a sip, then i move on and push through it On the way to the oracle You better check that your wallet's full You better make sure that you pay that toll Pretty thing yes life is a maze And there is only one escape She's a menace but she's yours to have and hold And all your best laid plans Can turn to dust in your hands And any petty thing you find can turn to gold I know you wanna be astral-bound But you're down in Gehennom now And the promises #invoked were swiftly sold Get up and try, get up and try Just another run then a day goes by Elbereth in the dust, hush, settle all the voices outside it's too much and I cannot abide, still a voice is saying Get up and try, get up and try Just another run then a day goes by Dippin' horns into potions and fluids Never look back, take a sip, then i move on and push through it Swirly smoky bubbly dark DoD's no walk in the park When you got no marker, wands or scrolls And your god damn pet just fell in a hole Yeah I got that sokoban, sokoban sadness You don't even know what the half is

7.00/10 score rank #10 of 23VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 7Vocals have nice energy and presence. Lots of variation in flow kept me engaged. Singing part was fire. Some parts seemed a bit syllabically dense for how chill the beat was. Booms baps and scratches. Gives me Nujabes vibes, nice. Effect on the Hook sample takes a trims away too much fat. Other than that, very well produced.

7.67/10 score rank #11 of 23VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 7Best bass of the round. Love the blend of different guitar samples as well. This arrangement sounds great, but I would have loved to hear some more use of original samples turned into instruments. I feel like you could really do some special stuff with this technique given the level of production you’re demonstrating. I could do with some more intentional transitions between sections, but I’m getting picky because this is mostly just great. The vocals sound really good throughout. Love your singing voice and the raps sound clean. Nothing jumps out to me as making me want to rewind back and listen again, but nothing feels bad to listen to. I’d love to hear you taking a little more risk vocally, rather than relaxing in the pockets we both know you could ride in your sleep.

9.00/10 score rank #1 of 23VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 10CHALLENGE 8THING ONE is being compared to THING TWO: Life / Society = Dungeons and Dragons campaign There are a few “Life = Game” tracks that were submitted; this one’s the most unique. I wish I understood more DnD references to really judge the bars, but I think you’re getting into some specific references. Maybe making the analogies clearer how they connect to real life (e.g. what are the punched unicorns and pets that fall in holes??) will help general listeners understand what you’re referring to. Might be the best chorus of the entire round. Zilla is up there with Lex Lingo as one of the top singers in the comp. Love when Zilla drops into that deep rap voice. The normal rap voice is not quite my style (too round and too many diphthongs maybe?) but when the outro hits and the scratches start, it’s ASCENSION!!! Really like the chill funky lounge beat, the arrangement is great and varied with guitar, complex bass line, a string sample, synths, and switches up throughout. Interesting and enjoyable to listen to.

7.67/10 score rank #2 of 23VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 9CHALLENGE 7Just noticed this is Enter Rikkaari's first VPC and I gotta say, the bar is high right now with this R1 submission. I think there's a LOT of depth and I find myself coming back for that beat again and again. Nice LDR reference here, by the way. Kicking it off with a bang here.

10.00/10 score rank #1 of 23VOCALS 10PRODUCTION 10CHALLENGE 10Such a vibe of an instrumental. Clean and enunciation through the full track. Great vocals and singing was super smooth. The filter hook call and response with such a treat. Scratch hooks, saxophone bits are beautiful work. ● Production: zero notes… great work across the board!
