Catching Freedom

Vocalist's challenge writeup

I decided to use collecting pokemon as a metaphor for gun culture in the USA. I specifically wanted to highlight growing up with toys of guns and the collecting aspect that seems to be unique to American gun owners...but with pokemon...

Producer's challenge writeup

I bought a VPC8 Dappersaurus mug and whanged on it with a wrench. Took the sample and pitched and stretched it around to make both a bell and a xylophone.

Lyrics
Grew up at the gym
Found a fighting acumen
Couldn't wait to train my own companion
Cause all of my heroes had them
Throwing balls, making calls
Every night in my dream
Mom and dad bought'um all
But only as figurines
Wanted the real thing
A live pet all set to fight
A Pocket monster flexing might
To match my own god complex syndrome
To be the best you gotta beat the best
Strove to be tested in the pokedome
Start training every day at the range
Gonna slay all the rest

I gotta catch'um all
Keep'um locked up in my vault
Know they're there when I need'um
for the day I can protect my freedom

Everybody's getting weaponized
Need more than one thinking
More like five
See the strength and I gotta have it
My Blastoise fully automatic
Got a lot of balls, armed to the teeth
Like I'm gonna form a large army
So if anybody tries to harm me
Its shock and awe in waves like starmie
Keep a shroomish spore stored
Here in my nightstand drawer
Keeps me sleeping peacefully
But don't bring out the beast in me
Cause I always hit my target
Throw Lucario he hits the hardest
Started small but I can't get enough
Put'um all to sleep like Jiggly puff

This is a great concept and I can’t believe no one has done it before. You ripped this idea. The flows stay pretty fresh, I wish the cadence was a little less monotone at points, but I get the solemn vibe. The mug clinks are dope. I like how you used them in a few ways, but I would have loved to heard more original sample work and creative applications with the level of production you’re bringing to the table. Overall this beat rips hard.

Vocal performance has great energy. Keep em locked up in my ball rapped with true conviction. Beat is subdued, yet has evolution. Vocal scratches came out nice! Gets a bit sparse after that.

    ● Gotta catch em all! The references I definitely did. Such a profound message behind the words. The mix was solid, lyrics were witty and clever. Great work ● Production- good mix of drum cadence and really supported the vocalist. Would add a little more variety instruments wise in the hook for it to pop out more! Solid track overall.

THING 1 is being compared to THING TWO: Pokemon = Guns LOL. At first I couldn’t parse the metaphor, then I looked at the album art. I was like IS THIS ABOUT A FUCKING GAT??? Yeah, you guys nailed it. You nailed the challenge. “Mom and dad bought'um all But only as figurines Wanted the real thing” Ahhh as in they only bought you toy guns! I like the spare beat - it works for this metal ass song about guns, although I’m always more partial to beats with more layers and arrangements going on. But a spare beat requires a vocalist to be IN THE POCKET because there aren’t drums to hide being off-beat. I’m not sure if An is intentionally dragging, but he drags so much and there is so little percussion that it just sounds sloppy. Recommend filling up sonic space with syllables, and practicing recording with a metronome.

I too yearned for the real thing as a kid. Bonus points for the Pokemon reference here, if not for the water types I'd equate this to a track from a trainer like Brock!
