Vocalist's challenge writeup

The metaphor in this song uses the idea that the deliberate daily regimen of farming (i.e. bringing plants from seed to fruition) is a plan for how one may also obtain life's goals, desires and objectives.

Producer's challenge writeup

There are two elements that meet the "resampled field recording" challenge. For the first, the pad (which can first be heard in the very beginning, behind the intro skit vocals) started life as an airport luggage scanner machine. I set my phone to record a voice memo as it was going through while I was traveling. I then discovered there was a beautiful, consistent frequency from the scanner, so I isolated a few different harmonics of it, resampled each of them as separate wav files, then turned it into a pad in my sampler with some processing. It can be heard throughout. The second element is the "plinky" melodic sound that is present in the verses, which started life as a squeaky, wet shower wall, being rubbed by my finger, and again being recorded as just a voice memo. I took that sound, ran it through some aggressive pitch correction, resampled it and processed it a few times, and turned it into the instrument you hear.

Lyrics
"Wow.. grandpa left me this whole farm. But there's all these boulders and fallen trees. Ugh… it just feels so overwhelming. Where do I even start? Oh look, he left a letter addressed to me…"

My dear grandchild, an advice heirloom.
The bells I bequest are the ones that rings true
A moment will arise when you'll feel so confused
And inside this tune is how you must move

Groove, cuz soon, your hours will be up
Don't waste sunlight when you could be on the huss
Trust the earth in all its concepts
Mush the dirt with working biceps

Chickens will prevent your overslept
Prep and reps are phenomenal first steps
Kept lists break apart the complex
Grab your can cause here's the logic

Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate
Your harvest you must
Cultivate
Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate...

Leaves drop with the environmental stress
So when tending your field you gotta carefully caress
When tilling the soil use the actions of direct
Cuz farm life is best when treated with respect

Don't guess, inspect, and do your research
When mother nature speaks. really hear her
Give growth spacious plots with room to glean
Till mulch graciously for all ya seeds

Hone your green thumb. Yes cultivate it
Understand, not demand. It's no debate with
Not too tight so the life gets plenty of light
Perlite inside so hydration stays right

Don't worry or hurry through the process
Use the tools you've earned on turning the pot mix
Balance is the challenge. Avoid the toxic
And when you dig it enough, you'll say “Yeah I got this.”

Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate
Your harvest you must
Cultivate
Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate
Your harvest you must
Cultivate
Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate
Your harvest you must
Cultivate
Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate...

Next season, fruition and mild success
On your laurels, however, you must not rest
Don't spoil the toil. Build refinement
Compounding ground til stability is met

ponds will clear from fighting farm fears
breathe deep and obstacles disappear
Plows easily steer with the proper gear
Strategize supplies to survive failure

Do your darndest to upgrade your harvest
Hearty parsnips come from worked gardens
Ya pumpkins carvings from perfect farthest
Character hardens as quantity 'largens.

Make some bargains, learn when to compromise
See the bigger picture through a farmer's eyes
Plant plenty of seeds cuz some don't arise
And pass on these secrets before your demise

Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate
Your harvest you must
Cultivate
Ya gotta water ya crops
There's no debate
Your harvest you must
Cultivate
Ya gotta water ya crops

THING 1 is being compared to THING 2 Life = farming OR you yourself = farming I think there is a good attempt at metaphor here, but because life/oneself is so general, I get lost in the metaphor as the song goes on. What do crops, green thumbs and harvests refer to in life terms? There’s an effort made towards it which I commend, but the wordplay and analogies could be drawn more clearly and cleverly. Right now it’s just “hey life is horticulture and here’s what you do in horticulture”. The flow is a bit repetitive, all rhymes land at the end of the bar, and most rhymes are 1 or 2 syllables. Consider varying your meter, rhyming beyond the same measure, and multisyllabic rhymes aligning stressed/unstressed syllables and internal vowels. The production is perfectly serviceable and pleasant, but a bit repetitive for me as well (piano, sample, bass, synth line - not many switch ups/dynamics). I did really like the synth brass solo at the end, an inspired choice!

    ● Such a groove of a track. Clean mix and vocals. Environmental metaphors are a rare topic and I'm here for it. I enjoy the filter on the vocals (perhaps an air filter haha) give the track a whole different feel. Along with lyrics telling a story of the life cycle of plants growing. ● Production- soulful! Great work and had such a breath of fresh air feeling throughout the song. Drum and melody are leveled pleasantly. Great job

Vocal energy is in the right pocket for this kind of beat. Flow has a nice swing that marches the beat as well. All of it’s serviceable, I suppose. Beat is cool, piano melody very jazzy. Bassline is proper in presence and melody. Vocal mix seems a bit crunched. Particularly during the hook.

This is a cute concept in a good way. The beat vibe is perfect. You’ve got some natural smoothness to your voice and flow. I do fear you suffer from recording while sitting down and maybe reading your vocals while recording them? I would challenge you to memorize your vocals and get some time practicing them without your brain having to do the work of recalling them while you’re performing them. It really makes a world of difference n a recording. You can really let the emotions flow through your words when you lose that layer of neural load. Your sung vocals sound fantastic! I absolutely love these background vocals. I wish the overall vocal mix was a little less mid-heavy. Even with vocals that aren’t recorded on expensive mics can sound super clean with a some careful EQ treatment. I absolutely love the drum work throughout the song. This is a great arrangement in general and the synth solo at the end is just right and ties a perfect bow on top of this song. The wet shower wall finger squeak might be my favorite found sample instrument of the round. What an absolutely delightful noise.

A solid bop across the board for R1, and bonus points for connecting the message here with both a greater positive philosophy and a fantastic game like Stardew. I've found myself come back to this song multiple times now and it's a great way to uplift a morning.
