Moonlight
Vocalist's challenge writeup
This felt particularly difficult to find a metaphor that fits something that I’ve been feeling as of late, and probably went through 3 different concepts lyrically before coming to moonlight, ultimately coming down to something ‘hidden’ that only comes out once revealed by the moonlight. In this case becoming so enraged/impassioned that risks compromising an entire relationship and that energy of seemingly transforming into a different person. With that darkness and intensity it could go horribly wrong… or very right.
Producer's challenge writeup
I spent a lot of time listening to the world, walking around in many different locations, and nothing clicked. I was walking around a busy shopping area at one point, looking at anything any everything that made a sound. I finally came across a child's toy that's aim was to teach how to do math through working at a cash register. The absurdity of purchasing an educational version of the thing you use to purchase the item itself checked not only the box for me of taking a recording of the unit and transforming it into instruments, but also felt very on-brand for the core concept of the challenge. Turning the tones of the register into the lead melody of the choruses, creating the piano-esque chords to support the verse, and tying it all together with the "ka-ching" of the register as a transitional impact sample.
Lyrics
Moonlight Leaving with my tail between my legs again Sorry for the bill give me the rain check Though I know it might be a lot for you to take in my patience is breaking HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU: it’s true THERE'S SOMETHING IN ME THAT HUNTS SOMETHING IN YOU It’s turned on this feeling in me… Inside me claw, sharpens my teeth I’m losing my mind You’re running out of time Not sure you’ll like what you find Lurking in the moonlight When it comes right down to it I think you better run Wanna say I’m better than killin’ someone's son And the way it’s going You’re gonna see EVERYTHING You’re gonna see everything And I can’t have that now can I No witnesses/no Alibi And I can’t- catch my breath Oh No! it’s happening again I I I I I I I~ I I I I. Awoooo I’m losing my mind You’re running out of time Don’t think you’ll like what you find Lurking in the moonlight Like DR JEKYLL YOU BETTER HYDE I’m lurking in the moonlight Maybe you’ll like what you find Once I get you in the moonlight I I I I I I I~ I I I I.

7.00/10 score rank #19 of 23VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 6● Overall solid track. There are a few vocal level issues I was hearing towards the second verse. Not sure If that was on purpose but it was noticeable. Love the vocals run throughout the song and the production really catered to them well. It was hard to fully find a clear metaphor in the song even when referring to notes in which I can understand the difficulty. Very heartfelt but just need the direction to be a little more direct. ● Production: solid beat from start to finish. Way to compliment the vocalist . Make sure to watch at certain points where the beat is louder than the vocalist. Good work!

7.33/10 score rank #10 of 23VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 7Thing 1 being compared to Thing 2 The Speaker = Werewolf Speaker = [blank] metaphors are pretty low hanging fruit, and the writer does not go too far with it. I can see the overarching idea of an emotional “side you don’t like” coming out, and comparisons being drawn to a werewolf. But more wordplay and clear parallels would make it stronger. That being said, I think the track shouldn’t be judged on a strictly “hip hop bars” criterium because it isn’t constructed that way. It’s clearly meant to be more vibey and give you a feeling, with the mournful legato vocals evoking (and at one point even mimicking) a wolf’s howl. Okay, I see what they’re trying to do now. Production is good, clean, supports the expansive vocal and gives it space. But it only uses two chords throughout; with such an opportunity to flex melodies with a beautiful singer, I’d love to hear more chord progressions.

7.00/10 score rank #10 of 23VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 7Love the melodic vocals. Solid vocal performance here. The second verse feels more like a bridge than a proper second verse. Some of the triplet parts could be tighter timing-wise. Beat is an immediate head bobber. Telephone effect on vox after first hook is a bit muddied.

7.00/10 score rank #6 of 23VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 6The production goes craaazy on this one. Immediately had me jumping, and the lyrics were spooky and a contrast from the beat. Scared me into vibing, but I think I like it!

8.67/10 score rank #2 of 23VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 9CHALLENGE 8This track has vibe for days. I love the way you use your voice. You’re able to conjure very expressive vocalizations without ever sounding forced or unnatural, I can tell you take your voice seriously and have worked really hard to achieve this level of control. Respect. We’re in store for some compelling songs from this team. I love all the vampire, monster, and general dark night imagery. The facets of yourself that you worry about sharing with even those closest to you. Who can’t relate to that? This beat sounds great and fits the vibe, though I wish it was just a tiny bit spookier. I do love that you made it spooky for the subject matter. This sample usage is honestly inspired. I do wish it was thematically ties to the lyrics more directly, but I cannot deny that it sounds fucking great.
