STAGE TWO : Secret War
Vocalist's challenge writeup
I felt like this challenge was directly in my wheelhouse The first draft of the song was almost 6 minutes but we decided against the extra length there were more bars with more pop culture references and more spirited beat switches but I feel like this is our best work for the competition so far. The interesting thing about this challenge wasn't the ability to create but rather the ability to "destroy". I had to let go of bars I loved and restructure my verse around certain elements in the song and Crow had to rearrange the song to condense it to our liking, in the end we came out with this! I entered this competition more so looking at it like an opportunity to work with Crow on more music but after seeing feedback from other participants over the contest I started feeling myself lol I felt like, if everyone else can have so much confidence, why shouldn't I? If sometimes I feel like the best, shouldn't I display that? Should I challenge my competition? Do I feel like we have competition? what do I have to say? I decided to call out my fellow vocalists whose work I've admired hoping to let them know what time it is.
Producer's challenge writeup
Greetings folks. Let’s see about the samples used across this track. Maybe it’s easiest to go by bin : Tools and Instructional - 5 Selections - The Pimpsons @0:41 : Used at the end of second transition ( 2:37 ) - Kombat Kuts @0:21 : Used at the end of the track ( 3:12 ) Breakbeats are looped and chopped across the tune, except for the final section where I play the pads. We’ve got : - A10 76 BPM : first section of my track ( 0:00 - 0:45 ) - A1 65 BPM : second section of my track ( 1:05 - 1:50 ) - The interview cuts are from the NPR show “ Piano Jazz “ w/Marian McPartland interviewing Alice Coltrane - B6 69 BPM : third section ( spliced with fills from “ Chi Ave - A Love Letter To Salvador”) ( 1:51 - 2:37 ) International - 3 Selections - Vidigal @2:25: Primary bass line for the second section of the track, This was one that had a very clean difference between L/R channels. Soloed the bass in the right channel and High-Cut the background elements before adding some saturation. Really a great natural pairing for the interview section. ( 1:05 - 1:48 ) - Hot Chocolate @2:21: used from 2:37 - 2:51 in my track, the guitar scrapes are warped and re-pitched to be an off-beat “ clock ticking “ type sound for the last transition. - Mindwill @3:05: used at the end of the last transition, 2:48 in my track Free Bin - 3 Selections - If I knew You Were Comin’ I’da Baked a Cake @0:01, : Used the voice at the beginning of the first section and the end of the first transition - The Coffee Song @0:05 : Used the 3rd measure from that recording as a backing texture for the Funky Penguin flip of Mario Bros. lvl 1-2 - Solid Potato Salad @0:21,@1:58,@2:18 : Used small snippets as a texture for the Mario 1-2 transition, as well as the end of that tune right before section 2. and the “SOLID” shout before section 2 ( the interview ) Dollar Bin - 4 Selections - Miriam , from Heidelberger Jazztage ’72 @9:48 : Fades in at the beginning then is chopped and re-arranged throughout the first section - Eve @0:00 : Slightly edited the introduction of this song with minor chops as the background for the final section of my track. - Heaven and Hell Is On Earth @0:08 : Used the group chant in the opening to add to the texture of section 3 of the track. Looped the “Hell” part and re-pitched it at the end of the harmonic phrases of my other secret sample ( “ -0_0 2 - Architects II - “Timeless” ) which is basically un-edited, - I also used the claps and stomps from this track as a transitional texture between the 3rd and 4th sections of the track. - Kyrie Eleison @0:00, : Used to slide into section 2 of the track, ALSO used a single bass note for many other things across the track. A simple sample so I could play bass across the different sections ( 1,3,4 ) including the transition between 1 and 2, even the Mario coin sound is a very high pitched “Kyrie Bass” In the spirit of the challenge, my goal was to use different sampling techniques and switch between beats with all of the good options that were given to us and a couple of alternates ( using a different Rufus Thomas breakbeat as an example ), Another thing that I did is what I consider a “forbidden” sampling technique, where I had a version of the track that my teammate wrote to, then changed a few of those sections out with other beats. Our original version of this submission was almost six minutes long so we had a lot of fun cutting things down and re-arranging. I am very happy with what we’ve got.

10.00/10 score rank #1 of 22VOCALS 10PRODUCTION 10CHALLENGE 10I am the core demographic for this track. I fucking love Piano Jazz <3. This track is a delight. I love the lyricism, the references, the sample chops, the transitions, the sequencing, the dynamics, the beat switch-ups. The samples overlap in such careful and delicate way. One scene melts into the next. This is such an exemplary entry for this challenge. The extra internal challenges, intentionally using multiple sampling approaches in distinct ways, forbidden techniques...My first perfect 10.

9.67/10 score rank #1 of 22VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 10CHALLENGE 10Witty lyrics and delivery. Loving the beat switches throughout the song. I enjoy the blends of nintendo sounds along with the traditional hip hop breaks. Lots of openness in the track to allow the vocalist to do their thing. good mix all the way around. Dope!

7.00/10 score rank #17 of 22VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 6CHALLENGE 8It took me until about 1:51 where the beat dropped to really feel this track, but I think it paid off in the end and I did enjoy it after listening back a few more times. The beat really built into something special and nothing satisfies the brain like that Switch click sound. References on references on references in this one! Y'all tied into pop culture throughout, but at some point it felt like the net was so wide-cast it didn't have as much impact.

9.67/10 score rank #1 of 22VOCALS 10PRODUCTION 9CHALLENGE 10This gives me Tyler The Creator vibes, in both production and vocal performance. This is very well done. Raps crazy on this one. I think the beat from 1:06 to 1:50 doesn’t sound as evolutionary compared to the rest of the song, but that’s it.

7.33/10 score rank #9 of 22VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 7There's no doubt you guys are a strong team. Vocalist and producer both execute on a high level. I particularly liked how hard the producer worked to incorporate a metric fuckton of the samples. The switchup at 1:51 was really fun! Of course you both met the challenge, but my two critiques are for the writing: 1) I think it would be more powerful to focus on a tighter range of references that somewhat fall into a similar category, rather than jumping from Corey in the House to Mario to Assassin's Creed. Makes it hard to follow or to have an overall clear "point" to the sng. 2) Many references are direct similes to character names, "like I'm ____", "I feel like ____". I would've liked to see you make use of more quotes, wordplay, or descriptive elements of the thing you're referencing.
