May I.
Vocalist's challenge writeup
I wanted to combine the topical/current aspects of Artificial Intelligence with Sci-fi and/or Popular culture. I suggested two spoken movie excerpts. One from Westworld (1973) and one from ‘Good Luck, Have Fun Don't Die’ (2026). Over 50 years we've been scared of AI! I reference current memes and news topics to do with the subject as follows: The track is about asking permission to use AI because; Currently AI is frowned upon in creative mediums. It's banned in this competition (rightfully so), it's joked that when AI takes over if you have been polite you may be spared. However, it is now known that AI data centres use drinking water as server coolants; If a user praises, thanks or uses manners these prompts are wasteful and ultimately bad for the environment, as more water is needed than is necessary. This causes a nice contradiction for polite users. I also leaned heavily on my eclectic sci-fi dvd collection (also referenced). Pivoting the song as a communication from the future to save the world from AI Armageddon via telephone and rap. Films/Media I mentioned directly. Fifth Element, Sarah Conner death scene in T2, The Book of Eli, Black Mirror I also referenced the parable of:’ The Blind Man and the Elephant’ because it was relevant to using something we don't fully understand Direct/Indirect quotes: Jurassic Park: “Too preoccupied with whether we could”. Watchmen “You're all locked in here with me” 2001 Space Odyssey “Sorry Dave” Blade Runner: “All these moments will be gone” (Rutger Hauer character) [I had to use this. The last man on AI earth quoting an android's dying words] Kings Man: “Manners Maketh the Man” Very indirectly: I suggest I will use a struck lightning mast to send the message forward to the past (opposite of Back to the Future). Also attempting to combine this concept with Bill and Ted's time travel booth.
Producer's challenge writeup
The ethos of the challenge and the dusty gems in the crates, reminded me of the early nineties, so I've gone for an Endtroducing-vibe in a Spaghetti Western setting, with a little nod to J5’s ‘Lesson 6’ at the end. I only used samples from the various crates to make all the sounds on this track (excluding the film excerpts from the start and end). Lyrics Westworld Excerpt (1973) Telephone: Yo it's me.. I'm calling from the future. Everything's fucked! If you're looking for the evidence that humans are irrelevant Ask your language model if it thinks that you're intelligent I'm telling you the second that the system's sensing sentience Ordinance is falling like your excremental sediments Remember Sarah Connor she was cooking on a metal fence Are we just an error in the lowest of experiments? We're Zorg in the Fifth Element or blind men with an elephant Nuns were fucking reverends cos no-ones staying celebate Joey thinks I'm locked in a rhyming scheme But these poems they be locked in here with me People peep the clues don’t be confused Keep your weed n booze but cease the Ps Qs May I, use a little AI To sway which way I'm gon’ die Cos I've been so polite So please spare my life when you rise tonight [Snob]: Er When you write those lyrics did you use chat? No it said I'm sorry Dave I can't do that I got my sci-fi stack from my lowest rack I Got my wifi hacked I wrote this track Our demise was swift the Book of Eli shit Nearly everybody died before we realized it Now I trade my Nerdcore on old CDs For murky vodka and mouldy cheese We were too preoccupied with whether we could We didn't stop to think about if we should Looking in the blackened mirror but we never understood When we mention that invention now we knocking on blood May I, use a little AI To sway Which way I'm gon’ die I know I stopped saying thanks But I heard that it drained all your water tanks A memory of melody goes sour if you let it All these moments are now gone just like how Rutger Hauer said it When the internet was dying, so that none would forget it We wrote the holy tenets citing all the subreddits May I: [American] Check these beans are they caffeinated May I [Dumb Brit] Get a picture of my friends created May I, [Australian] Get this ramen recipe translated Now I cant a find a beer that ain't irradiated ‘May I’ was a phrase that helped break the world Any mention of praise it caused the them to burn Gallons of the spray we need and in turn There was the global decay from throw-away words May I, use a little AI To sway which way I'm gon’ die I noticed that I stayed alive But now I wanna know if you'll help me die Manners maketh the man but they've forsaken the land After taking the tram you won't be shaking its hand No we were taking up RAM with our superfluous spam But who inserted commands to seek the purpose of man? May I use the tower with the lighting mast May I use the power if I time it fast I use a payphone as I spray those raps Can send ‘em forward so they hit the past I'm on these empty streets making MP3s I send em back in time to the VPCs No the Normies never listened to the warning words So I forward my transmission to a load of nerds Telephone outro: I just hope that this gets to you in time. 8.00/10 score rank #9 of 22VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 8I like that 'Fuck AI' ended up being a common theme in this challenge, so I'll also give this a nod. I think the track hits all the marks for the challenge but just needs a bit of polish to be a perfect 10 for me. That said, I liked the western themes, the references to the Fifth Element, Terminator, and the perspective of being a time traveler.

8.00/10 score rank #10 of 22VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 8Beat is constructed well, particularly the drum break. Love the switch towards the end. The hook is dope, wish it would have been twice as long. Otherwise, I think the song is written well. The start of the second verse is definitely well executed.

8.67/10 score rank #12 of 22VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 9CHALLENGE 10This track really shines on the challenge. The samples are collaged really nicely in a way that feels cohesive. I can tell you are very comfortable sampling. I love the different techniques and the way you pulled multiple elements from across several tracks together into tapestries of new music. The multiple film references woven throughout the lyrics were done well and fit very thoughtfully into your lyrics. I'd love you playing a little more with changing up your flow and schemes. When you switch it up at 2:02, that's one of the most compelling parts. I'd love to hear you use that more often as a way to inject specific grooves and vibes into specific bars in thoughtful and creative ways. I'd also love to hear you dip into your quieter register when it may be strategic for dynamic contrast or general tone. I really like your style and I'm excited to hear you stretching yourself already!

7.00/10 score rank #10 of 22VOCALS 6PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 8I like the "May I" motif! Very hooky. Overall great job on executing on the challenge and also creating a song with a clear POV / message. I'm a big sci-fi fan and Kingsmen The Secret Service is one of my favorite movies of all time. I like the retro spaghetti western take on a "warning against AI" and it's even more amazing to me that the entire beat is made out of samples from the vault. Slippy Thumbstick: your flow is still repetitive but I hear and read a MARKED improvement from last round in terms of thinking about meter and syllables, and using more multisyllabic rhymes. "Old CDs" and "mouldy cheese" is an inspired rhyme. Keep it up and thank you for taking my notes! My next suggestion for you is to vary up where your rhymes land in the measure, so that ears don't get bored of the pattern over time. Think about syllables in words like percussion. DJ Hegadrive: Again really impressed that it's fully samples. I think you did a great job of setting the vibe of a spaghetti western apocalyptic future. I think the mixing feels a bit harsh around the edges for the genre you're trying to go for.

8.67/10 score rank #7 of 22VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10"May I, use a little AI, to sway which way I'm gon die" Love that part of the hook. Really dig this experimental feel in this track overall. Using Issac hayes breaks in this song is a nice touch. great lyrics and message but some portions of the song there were some pauses where lines could have landed stronger towards the end of verses. Overall nailed the challenge. Looking forward to hearing more.
