Vocalist's challenge writeup

For this challenge I decided to pay tribute to one of my favorite villains, Skeletor. The beginning of each four bar stanza is a quote from the cartoon or reference to a Skeletor meme. Enjoy!

Lyrics
I don't like to feel good, I like to feel evil
im Bad to the bone and I like to hurt people
Got a Staff in my hand, my magic is lethal
Keep Staying on brand, competition is feeble
I must possess all or I possess nothing
You can think that I'm crazy never think that I'm bluffing
Hit like a knee to the stomach or the paint that your huffing
Don't try to change my ways I keep on corrupting
The simple minded, stay surrounded by fools
But they do what I say, so I use them as tools
To Serve my dark purpose the definition of cruel
Ain't got no scruples, please believe I'll cheat in a duel
Could write a book about what you don't know
The king of deceit, the prince of low blows
Sounds like the back of my hand when the beat slaps
Skeletor the villain, spell the name in all caps

...Just here to make'um say MYAA!
Top of the food chain don't quit your day job
...On me to rule Etern-e-a
All of you heroes ain't making me stop
protect, I attack, i give you fun facts
Line after line for you to run back
Here building a reign that's unmatched
Drop tracks for the love now you can bump that
Remember being borns a life sentence
Step up to bat I swing for the fences
Underworldly drivin’ can't beat the obsession
Class is in session, I'm teaching life lessons
Permitting myself to be fabulous
Make sure the cape is immaculate
Bad bitch at my side, the kingdom is mine
Dropping gems from my mind until next time

This might be my favorite An Hobbes. This beat is such a perfect match for your flow. Team synergy on full dominance display here. Great reference work. When I was writing this challenge, I was trying to figure out how to describe what I meant in a way that included Batman quotes, but also stuff like “swing for the fences”. That kind of term is just packed with evocation and I love when writing pick out and employ those little nuggets of particularly dense language. This is a great balance of that whole spectrum of referential composition. I LOVE the way you used these samples—especially the 21st Century Steel Band sample. The rhythmically displaced vocal sample technique might be somewhere on another track, but this is the only one I clocked as being such a showcased part of your beat. Always a classic, used here to “rewind that back” levels of effectiveness. This beat is great. It does exactly what a rap beat should do and it perfectly serves your vocalist’s performance. I also really appreciate the e multiple levels of layers you have coming in and out for subtle variation. Really well crafted. These claps sound fucking great.

Beat is cool, love the descending baseline, reminds me of some classic Outkast. Vocals delivered with a swagger that I enjoy from his team. Hook chant effects are nice, but could use a subtle vocal lead on top just to make it a bit more understandable.

By the Power of Greyskull! Definitely enjoyed this track, clear vocals and production. Less is more was definitely used to your advance in this round. Great lyrics, open production to allow vocals to break free and overall great vibe. Great use of paying tribute to a great villain in 80's cartoons and bringing it to life!

I really liked this one. Simple but effective. I love that the vocal samples chosen are slightly related to Skeletor. And god I love that chorus!!! That is the definition of a concise, effective, melodic hook that isn't even sung, but a sample. An Hobbes: I can hear that you've taken my notes about time feel and it shows. Big improvements made. I also like that you didn't rap in the Skeletor voice despite it being his POV. You incorporated aspects of the Skeletor voice with your own and used that instead. Good choice. 2-Ton 21: I usually critique beats for being simplistic and while this sound simplistic on the surface, it's deceptive. The samples are used to create variation, interest, and depth but also motifs that feel familiar when they recur (e.g. chops throughout the verse and the full sample in the chorus). The descending bass line sounds great. THAT CHORUS IS FIRE.

Where are your scruples?! Must have thrown them out and really tuned into the heinous mischief that is Skeletor in this one. I really like the nods here to the source material and yes I did pick up that Madvillain reference at the end of the first verse thank you very much. The beat here matches the dark, villainous nature of Skeletor without being taken too seriously, there's some levity that I think matches the shenanigans about him. Found myself bopping my head immediately. This is a success on all fronts for me!
