Heathcliff
Vocalist's challenge writeup
To keep things as real as possible and knowing I would have to do rapping as a character and convey passion in doing so, I opted for making a wrestling character from my home turf of Yorkshire, as the more vocally passionate I get, the stronger my accent from that region becomes. So being an American wrestler really wouldn't track. I chose Heathcliff, a character from a local historic writer Emily Brönte, as inspiration taken from Wuthering Heights. But the parallels between wrestler Heathcliff and Brönte’s Heathcliff are minimal at best. I chose to do 4 verses. Character Origin One being his Origin; a giant, mountain of an orphan child working the farm and having some success in the local fighting rings. But also showing some unlikeable traits already. Hungry for success Here he realises he has talent for fighting, goes to America to wrestle and finds himself stuck as enhancement talent and with novelty personas, but what he wants is personal recognition. Height of Fame He achieves his goals but at his height of fame he is really at his lowest point, hence the dark vibe. The drugs and sex scandals that have been foreshadowed throughout the song come to a head and he is suspended for his behaviours and a lewd act in the ring. Forced Retirement He returns home in shame. Growing old, lonely and retrospective he ultimately realises that there was more to life than fame, fortune and meaningless relationships. On his deathbed he rejects violence and his lifestyle. However he is a flawed character and at heart he is still a wrestler so hopes there is wrestling in the afterlife. I see his journey as being a full rags to riches and back to ditches affair. Very Hip Hoperah. Vocally I emulated the different eras of his life/career and attempted to follow all previous feedbacks in doing so.
Producer's challenge writeup
Once we'd agreed to go down a Wuthering Heights inspired path for the wrestler, it only made sense to me to use the Kate Bush song as the basis for the theme and track. Theme I thought about all the classic wrestling themes, and the most memorable ones were those that had a distinctive sound at the very beginning that was instantly recognisable, like the glass breaking for Stone Cold, or the ominous bongs for The Undertaker. So what would work for Heathcliff? The howling wind of the moors of course! After that, I played the chords from the verse of the Kate Bush song and made the whole thing sound as brooding as possible. Song The intro is a sample of the Kate Bush track, with the piano stem-separated and sped-up. This creates a dramatic build with the wind of The Moors in the background, interrupted by a thunderclap. The next section uses the same sounds and some of the same chords as the theme (other than the drums), but rearranged to give a slightly different vibe. The same is true of the chorus. These sections are more positive in tone, which matches the narrative of Heathcliff’s rise through the ranks. The third verse takes a darker turn. I used stem-separated vocals of Kate Bush to add some extra context as Heathcliff goes off the rails. Following the final chorus there's a sample of former WWF President, Jack Tunney, suspending Rock Rude, which has been repurposed to relate to Heathcliff: https://youtu.be/c-X2QFUs-zY?is=SIv-1EQU2A5tdUMM The final verse works as a coda to what came before. Heathcliff has burned his bridges and has to return back to The Moors. The music here uses another stem-separated part of ‘Wuthering Heights’ and then chopped up. I think that this section gives a melancholic-vibe, suggesting that Heathcliff will be better off away from the limelight, but will always be haunted by Kathy.

8.67/10 score rank #4 of 24VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10I think this is your strongest track yet! Challenge-wise I've got no notes. The story is there and I get a sense of his character and fall from glory. I think the song went on just a tad too long that the transition at the end felt more jarring and forced than a proper flow, but I'm glad there's a "resolution" in the story all the same.

7.00/10 score rank #21 of 24VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 6CHALLENGE 8Entrance theme gives me old school horror-themed wrestler vibes. Beat on the song is interesting, although there’s a discordance in some of the melodic elements that doesn’t help (one of the organ chords in particular). Beat switch was cool. Blame all the crack cocaine. Vocalist’s energy is good. Hook has a nice (although the second folk-y style hook could be executed a bit better), but overall it has call and response style that I enjoy.

6.67/10 score rank #16 of 24VOCALS 6PRODUCTION 6CHALLENGE 8I would love to hear more of the intro sample in the beat during the song. The main mix is okay, but I would encourage you to step back and listen globally. Some of the big samples dropped in have too much low end and feel way too loud or big. This can end up having an impact on the dynamics. The organ section ends up feeling much bigger than when the fast acoustic drum beat come in. "Let me spin that yarn, I was born in a barn" uses an approach I see a lot of newer rappers use, and it always feels just a bit clumsy. fitting two statements into two halves of a bar, especially with a common one syllable rhyme can hit the listener's ear like the pocket has been cut in half. This isn't necessarily bad, but needs to be done intentionally. If you're opening a verse like that, it's going to feel like you are setting a cadence that you'll be playing off during this verse. If that's not your intention, I'd be careful when and why you use that two rhyming half bars cadence, because it will always stand out and feel like a choice.

7.67/10 score rank #15 of 24VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 6CHALLENGE 10Oh man, I hear a huge jump in the complexity of the vocals and writing! Challenge met perfectly. Really like the unique idea of a wrestler from Yorkshire and using his accent as a vocal tool to paint a picture of the character. The production is great too, love the use of the wind of the Moors and the Kate Bush sample (with Kate Bush being a theme throughout). I think parts of the production sounds a bit rough on the edges and could have used a bit more polish. Fun promo video, I liked Heathcliff's outfit.

8.67/10 score rank #5 of 24VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10great use of the organs in this song! I also love the use of the accent of the vocalist shines in the song. Production was very solid and leveled for the vocals to shine through nice and clear. Love the story and commend you for doing a different style of a track this round. The small part I would have the mention is the last portion of the song was a little louder then the beginning mix which caught me off guard. Other than that, I enjoyed the song.
