CHOKE BROTHERS

Open audio
Vocalist's challenge writeup

The story follows prominent 90's wrestlers: CHOKE HOGAN and GRIP FLAIR, a heel-face pairing that lit up 90's attitude era wrestling. The story sets out their relationship, partners in pain, with their signature move being choking the life out of people, but during a VesselMania taping CHOKE accidentally put a fan into a coma sparking controversy and ending their elusive deal with VPC Wrestling Federation. But as luck would have it, their story wasn't done, a second chance, during VesselMania XLII (42) the pair were given a tag team "bad-blood" rematch against the injured fan and his lawyer, this unfortunately didn't go ahead as CHOKE HOGAN, due to age and FDA restrictions, decided to pump a load of growth hormones before the fight but did too much and exploded, GRIP FLAIR still fought that night but ultimately lost on a three-count.

Producer's challenge writeup

The entrance theme gives more depth to the duo, highlighting their dynamic, and all of it completely true, much to the annoyance of the local sheriff departments and governing bodies.

Lyrics
GRIP FLAIR & CHOKE HOGAN

Listen up, thick necks, here, give me a moment,
The tag team champs are back, who’s our opponent?
Don’t matter, we’re leaving them, tapped, wasted and broken,
The combination of Grip Flair baby and Choke Hogan,
Our stock has surely risen, We’re the best in our division,
Listen, one grip around your throat muscle, revisits your position
Grip strength is immense, kilo newtons in the millions,
working with my bare hands crushing girders for a living,
Physically strong, grip it, I could bend iron,
If I put my hands on the watch, baby I could bend time
I keep my hands on the weights, and my my eyes on the finish line,
Google up our name and you’ll see more heel vids than Quentin Tarantino’s hard drive,

CHOKE!
—
Fingers grip around your neck, esophageal broke,
You can never win a match with me, pick another bloke,
Saying you're the best, mirrors with the smoke.
Clothesline to your neck, and now you really start to-

Choke - 3 years, now I’ve been living broke,
4 years since me and Grip Flair haven’t even spoke,
He’s like Choke Hogan, why you had to wreck it for us both,
On that fateful day, VesselMania, out on the coast,
Triple-threat match, tables, ladders and the chairs,
I was coming down the ramp, I was gonna take the stairs,
When out comes my opponent, tried to jump me unawares,
So I turned and took him on, I grabbed him by his underwear,
Chokeslams, elbow drops, crippler cross face,
Grip kept screaming at me “yo, fuck him up ‘H”
But I was so mistaken, he said “yo, what the fuck ‘H”
Turns out it was a fan I had mistakenly unmade,
Standing there, knee deep in the blood,
I looked at the VPC judges like: “whoops”
[That went about as well as expected really, they were… Upset]

CHOKE!
—
Fingers gripped around neck, esophageal broke,
Never won a match again, pick another bloke,
Saying I’m innocent, well it's just mirrors with the smoke.
Clothesline on his neck, and now I really start to-

CHOKE out east, doing shows in Japan and-
Other little countries I don’t even understand,
They tell me that my bad boy style is out of hand,
And I need an ego check, say they want another man,
So, CHOKE on this, in my mailbox just arrived,
Invitation: VesselMania XLII,
That’s 42, in case you don’t speak Roman like I,
Special guest appearances, Choke brothers - sublime,
Hop aboard the flight, ticket back into the big leagues,
Choke Hogan, baby, know you motherfuckers missed me,
Met Grip Flair back stage where the synths be,
The handshake was epic, but my muscles flex limply,
This can’t happen, I need to get my fucking choke on,
BRB, time for me to get my anabolic poke on,
Grab the needles of the Deca Durabolin,
Straight to the bicep, couple more it’s swollen,
But it’s starts itching, stinging, I’m certain,
10 minute show call, my bicep is hurting,
I feel I’m swelling up too quick it’s really quite alerting,
Tie my belt and then explode into a puddle on the curtains,
[DING DING]

good submssion. Really like the lyrics and premise in this song. There were a few times where the delivery could of been a tad better but there were only small errors. I really dig the play on words with hogan and flair throughout the song and very well put together and nailed the challenge. only things were that i wish the vocals were a little bit cleaner in the mix also the same with the production. Other then that great work!

This track is dripping with vibe. This is a really great tempo for your natural flow. You're really in your pocket on this one and it feels great. For vocal double under raps, I would recommend either trying to match the cadence and go for a true doubled vocal mix, or go for emphasis lyrics, rather than doubling the full vocal. There are definitely other ways to play with doubling, but having a second take with a less hype cadence of the same lyric can hit the ear a bit like pitchy harmonies, due to the almost tonal nature of this style of rap vocals. Even if they aren't sing-songy from note-to-note, even a spoken or rapped melody can have pitch dissonance with another. You've just got to be aware of how the two takes are interacting and plan/apply that effect intentionally. Overall, this is a solid vocal performance. I'd love to hear you push your schemes into some new territory and juggle some internal rhymes. I feel like that could help add some fresh diversity to the meter of your bars. This is a good dance beat. I appreciate the different layers and levels weaving in and out. You use those transitions to highlight the narrative of the lyrics, which is ideal. For the arena style echoverb in the intro, I find most reverbs are designed with more lowend than is realistic in a room filled with soft, absorbent people. Putting a high pass filter on just the reverb can really help the reverb from feeling like it's right up against your ear and battling the dry vocal for space. A quick way to do this is to put the reverb in a send where it can have it's own effects chain afterward.

I can see this being an entrance for one of them wrestlers that run out to the ring super fast, lol. Beat is cool. Could use a bit more instrumentation at parts, as there are parts where main drum sequence seems to command too much presence. Rhymes are are solid, flow could be tighter at spots, but otherwise this is enjoyable.

Challenge is buttoned up here, no questions. Appreciate addressing the judges directly - and yes, don't choke fans on our watch please! A couple times in the song there were some flubs on the flow with the vocals and the beat. Not terrible, but enough to prevent perfect marks. Also, love the nod to 90s wrestling, because it's what I know best!

Met the challenge - deducted points because I feel like the narrative could be clearer (couldn't really follow the story with just the lyrics - had to read the notes to understand), and the intro theme doesn't really feel like an intro theme. Vocals and production are both good, not exceptional. The vocal delivery, rap meter and rhyme schemes are a little too repetitive to keep my interest. The production is solid but also a bit repetitive.
