Weapon X

Open audio
Vocalist's challenge writeup

I’ve never been much of a wrestling fan or really a fan of any kind of sport, but I’m a huge fan of superheroes specifically Marvel. And seeing as how there is a wrestler in the Marvel universe I thought I would take this as an opportunity to actually write a song about a nerdy topic for once. This song tells the story of one specific scene in the 2000 movie X-Men as you can see in the promo video I included. Wolverine’s origin as Weapon X, his days cage-fighting at a bar, and his inevitable removal from the venue, which coincides with his paternal instincts to nurture and protect.

Producer's challenge writeup

I created a series of high energy parts to build tension and excitement during an entrance, focused on capturing a clear “first sound” that would immediately perk up a crowd. This transitioned to a build section that could be easily repeated by a DJ to allow for anticipation and reveal timing to be right, then landing on a big loud part that would support pyro and other lighting as the performer enters the arena. These parts are all present within our final track as elements of the verses, although not lined up exactly as they are in the theme, as we understood the judges’ feedback in discord to allow.

Lyrics
WEAPON X – MECHANICAL PEASANTS

Yeah, I got the toughest exterior,
Maybe not tough, but it just heals better,
Bone graft adamantium,
Used to tell folks, nope, that it can’t be done

But they laid me down and chopped me to pieces,
Analyzed electrophoresis,
Gave me a blade prosthesis
In between the knuckles of every single one of my fingers

Then they took my memories,
Erased more than a century,
Made man a machine that could fight their enemies

I fought in every major conflict,
Even Days of Future Past with the timeslip,
But we’ll get to that later,
This story takes place before the time of Xavier

What do you think of me now
When your back’s against the cage?
I don’t know who I am, but I’ll take that wage,
I only get stronger with age

Okay, my back’s to the cage, back to the stage of life
Like knives cutting, peeling away,
The same routines and the same old play,
Survive this night, die a different day

A different way, I think there might be,
But I got a bully that paid to fight me,
A door of drunk punks that’s revolving nightly,
In my game we don’t do a thing politely

I rose to fame and great renown,
They knew me throughout the town,
Now more man than a machine,
They called me “The Wolverine”

Finding my own, had a job and a home,
But I never could leave well enough well alone,
When a former opponent returned for atonement,
I showed I condoned no remorse for the moment

What do you think of me now
When your back’s against the cage?
I don’t know who I am, but I’ll tame that rage,
I only get stronger with age

Bartender tried to kick me out,
“Get out of my bar freak!” I heard him shout,
I conveyed that it wasn’t right
And that you shouldn’t bring a gun to a knife fight

Yeah, they call me fatherly,
Shoot, I can’t say that it bothers me,
X23, Rogue, & Jubilee,
What did they do to me to make these kids see right through me?

The downfall of my story?
My own fall from glory?
I don’t mean to flex, but more or less
It’s because I'm the best

But rather than choose to fight,
I choose to feel,
Rather than injure,
I choose to heal

Have said this and will say it again. AJB is one of the best technical rappers in this competition. The inflections and timing are impeccable, but that's just his "drummer" showing :) Challenge met perfectly. Love the Wolverine angle and the narrative is clearly delineated. Entrance theme is dope and sounds like an entrance theme. Love the singing on the hook and I love the changeups in time signature throughout the song. My only feedback for Kyle Vice is that the drums could be a bit more salient in the production. There is a bit of crackling and clipping throughout the track, so the mixing could also be cleaned up a bit.

The vocal gets a bit swallowed up in this mix at points. I would encourage you give the rap vocal it's own mix. It will often need a lot more low-mid and low-end body to sit in the right place in the mix. You can achieve this in the recording my being closer to the mic for the rap takes to add proximity effect, and backing off for the melodic vocals. This can come down to having a much more high-velocity vocal next to one that's using much less air speed. A multi-band compressor on the guitar that pushes conflicting mid-high frequencies down when the vocal speaks up can help make the guitar feel present and in your face, while still letting the vocal push it's way over the top when it needs to.

The track itself I thought was a very strong submission for R3. I like the change up in the tempo of the song, the lyrical delivery and the pickup after that first chorus goes hard af. The strongest part of the song are your vocal and production elements, but I would have liked to see a unique creation of a character or at least a way to turn this character into something your own. That said, I thought it was a creative take on the challenge and think it still deserves most of the credit for how the story points and development of the character tie into each other.

A wolverine track! That's What Up BUB! Love the energy of the singing hook with the rap shift. Production was solid with the rock/rap switches but some portions the instruments would drown the vocal just a tad. Best strategy I would apply would be to listen to the vocals acapella, put instrumental at 50 volume and see where there can be inconsistancies in the vocal levels. Other than that, great track and love X-men.

Shirtless hairy-chested wrestler wearing jeans, slow walking to the ring type shit. Love the Marvel references throughout here, along with the flow switch ups. It’s a good song as written, though it might be a bit too faithful to the source material. Vocal volume seems to be low compared to the instrumentation.
