Sad Pixcels - The Rise and Fall of Marcus 'Thunderfuck' Jones
Vocalist's challenge writeup
Greetings, our honorable, illustrious judges— This round was a bit of a challenge for me because I am not traditionally a fan of wrestling; not that I think there’s anything wrong with it, but I had a phase with it when I was a kid and left it in the past. In our song “The Rise and Fall of Marcus “Thunderfuck” Jones,” we illustrate the journey of our titular heel as he is told ‘hey, you’d make a good backyard wrestler’ and then gets so fucking overconfident that he ends his journey with an injury that’ll probably heal if he just avoids carrying anything heavy. I think it was an interesting angle to write a song about someone who’d never wrestled before as someone who’s not into wrestling. It posed a ton of challenges too, as I wrote (almost) an entire song before realizing I was just talking a bunch of shit without conveying the story required in the challenge. I am glad Sads pointed that out, because I think the song’s better as a result. I tried to apply some of the critique from R2 in this one, but I admit a lot of it is a work in progress. I do admit the rhyme scheme this time is a little basic (AAAA, BBBB) but I figured since the track was shorter anyway, and it’s from the POV of a child, it’d be fitting. Also, and I might be the only one who thinks this, but I liked the way I did the ‘master / caster / podcasters/’ line; it reminded me of a rhyme I might hear in a DOOM track, though I would never deign to compare myself to the madvillain himself. In any case, I hope y’all dig this one; I can definitely sense my skills growing with each round, which I imagine is what y’all intend. So, thank you!
Producer's challenge writeup
As Pixcelation and I were discussing what to do with the beat, he expressed at first being interested in a character like Sabin from FFVI, so I looked up the notation for the song, and designed the entrance theme first, to which Pixcelation added lyrics. As the memorable wrestling themes have something to alert the crowd to the wrestler coming out, I added a train horn to the beginning, to add the connection as famously Sabin suplexes a train. From there, I chopped various sections from the guitars, synths, and bass from the original theme and crafted the beat based on that, as well as found a bone breaking sound effect to the instrumental for the climax of the story. We reused the lyrics from the entrance theme for the hook, but more as a background to the sounds of pain from Pixcelation.
Lyrics
I was hangin’ with my bros / watchin anime shows / DBZ / One Piece / and Bleach / when an idea arose / Said he thought I would be great / in some backyard throws / There’d be tons of other kids / all of whom I would oppose / I had never really ever saw myself as a challenger / If I were to fight right now I’d be rendered an amateur / But maybe with a little bit of moxie and confidence / I’d be a / master / castor / with hits faster than podcasters / I stepped once to my left / then I hopped to my right / call me Stephen Curry cause my shots’ outta sight / never knew defeat cause I owned every fight / ‘til I was invited to a match in the pale moonlight / It was time for the show / prepared my death blow / Had a suplex and a thing that I called ‘hammer throw’ / I would not be off tempo if my foe didn’t show / either way I’ll knock him out / call me fists akimbo / It was not an easy match / maybe he’ll pull out the win—psyche! / I was pulling punches ‘til I did a Meteor Strike! / [visceral pain sounds / moaning / cursing the name of his friend who recommended he get into this dangerous sport in the first place over the hook which is reused from the Entrance Track part] Background Hook: YEAH / It took a long, long time but I’m finally here / the crowd screams in delight as their savior appears / I take a leap from the van / check my uniform’s tight / wave goodbye to the folks / watch ‘em zoom outta sight /

8.67/10 score rank #4 of 24VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 9CHALLENGE 9Starting right out the gate - I love the FF reference in the beat. Immediately caught that and with it being a shorter track I probably listened to this one back to back 10 times Much like a backyard brawl, these lyrics landed hard and fast. I think the challenge was nailed in a hilariously bad way- bad for the wrestling persona you painted. Sounds like a regular unlucky guy who took a bad fall and as someone who never lets things heal like they should... I relate to that message. One question... how did they get the nickname "Thunderfuck"?

7.00/10 score rank #21 of 24VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 7Enjoying the interpolation of a classic RPG theme. A knight-themed wrestler definitely coming out to this. The writing in the verses are solid, though the flow could be dialed in a bit more with a few more takes. There’s some call/response happening during the talking parts, but the talking overshadows that vocal section in the mix. Sound has potential to be an ear worm if you run that Final Fantasy melody back with a hook, I was waiting for that, lol. Beat is straight, drums could be a bit more meaty in the mix, same w/ baseline.

8.67/10 score rank #5 of 24VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10lol! such creativity with a short amount of time. Got in and got out. Sometimes those end up being great songs and you definitely made a huge improvement this round. Vocals were clear and the production was very cool with the synths and pads sections. It also sounds like it could have definitely sounds like it came straight from an SNES video game cartridge which is super awesome. good work this round!

6.67/10 score rank #16 of 24VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 6CHALLENGE 7Cold open! Right into the beat and bars. The vocal overdubs are a bit loud and kind of drown out the main vocal at point, but the vocal mix is sounding much better overall on this track! This is a fun, short story. I can appreciate biting off what had the bandwidth to tackle for this round. This is a solid story and entry. I would have loved to hear what this team did with a more time.

6.00/10 score rank #21 of 24VOCALS 6PRODUCTION 5CHALLENGE 7Good effort with varying up some of the complexity of the rhymes! It does technically chronicle a wrestler's rise and fall, but it's a bit gimmicky and all happens in one verse. "I never wrestled and I did it and got injured". Which is funny, but I think I would've liked to hear it fleshed out more, really building out the character and his kayfabe/origin story etc. I feel like the production complements the song but I find it a bit flat (especially the drums), it lacks dynamics and I feel like the vocals don't blend well enough.
