Vocalist's challenge writeup

When I think of club music I think of one thing and one thing only; the opening rave scene in the 1998 seminal classic film, Blade. I imagine a grungy techno industrial cyber goth dance club where I'm not sure where I am, but I know Blade is going to use this music to slay vampires. In the beginning stages, the song had more of a feel of this. An aggressive 'beat em up' type track. But as time went on I realized my relationship with club music isn't indicative of this. In keeping up with the overall theme of our music for this competition I decided to make club music for a fleeting moment in time. Much like those random bar nights in college, it wasn't about what was playing but it was about the event. The end of the world. This club is suppose to represent a time where you just want to move and feel alive. Refusing to let go of the moment while also letting yourself live in it's ending. I felt the music Crow put together and I was able to write it in almost a stream of consciousness. Knowing that this club will likely soon be gone... We celebrate. outcasts that may arrive alone but we all leave together.

Producer's challenge writeup

This was a surprisingly hard challenge for me. ACH was pretty straightforward with good references and I was a little bit broken by the local heat and teaching middle schoolers over the weeks. Didn’t have the same time to get ahead as I usually do. So last weekend I put up some drafts based on the references and then was asked about my first impressions of the ‘club’ experience. Made me realize that it’s a strange place that I have had some strange encounters in. After working on something for a few days I dropped the concept and even switched DAWs to get a fresh start. I decided to kind of go to my roots a little bit and use primarily stock sounds from the Logic Pro loop library, and the loop grid mode ( that kinda imitates ableton ). I figured it was a bit of a blind spot for a lot of producers today. And there was a lot of material there that I haven’t used or heard before. So eliminating the responsibility of designing and focusing more on sequencing was a breath of fresh air. After sending a few drafts to artClass, he wanted to know if I could sing on the hook.. which I think is legal . but it also became a good returning point for the tune that switches from space to space a little bit. From there. It was just a matter of tuning and elimination. There have been a couple of times where I was concerned about submitting on the deadline because we built a habit of being done pretty early and quickly. But this is different. really snapped into place on the last day. I don’t know how it’ll hit the crowd.. but I think being that much closer to actually doing all the rounds and building my relationship with ACH. They don’t call it a challenge for nothing. I wonder if people will be able to pick out where most of these sounds come from.

[HOOK]
I can't
let
this
go

[VERSE 1]
hi!
when i step in the function
im causing disfunction
a major disruption

hi!
im higher
than vultures
and ravens and crows
when im circling

I do not think that
the tree is enough
I need music to stomach this

I move
like im Christopher Walken
my weapon of choice
is to sever it

I'm seeing the girlies
they moving around
like fuck all this other shit

I'm seeing the homies
move round
in tandem
they say fuck the government

I'm seeing a rainbow
in motion
I must be
gaining some confidence

the eyes
that are locking in place
are fixed on a moment
in time when

[BRIDGE]
a moment in time where we bleed air

a moment in time for purpose

[VERSE 2]
okay
hands in the sky
the apocalypse coming
i need you to witness it
with the intention
we're building a monument
here in a minute
it stands til we finish it

okay
hands in the sky
the apocalypse coming
i need you to witness it
with the intention
we're building a monument
here in a minute
it stands til we finish it

[VERSE 3]
okay
hands in the sky
the apocalypse coming
I need you to witness it
with the intention
we're building a monument
here in a minute
it stands til we finish it
im feeling the love
im looking at her
shes looking at me
we're dancing around in a circle
with bodies
that move like the ocean

[BRIDGE 2]
come here baby
get closer

the sky is too red now to let go
i need your body to hold me

the sky is too red now to let go
i need your soul and your body

the sky is too red now to let go
see us we dance in oblivion

the sky is too red now to let go
it feels like im feeling like kid again

feeling like kid again

dance in oblivion

feeling like kid again

dance in oblivion

[VERSE 4]
ah
can you see it
the fire is raising the ceiling
you feel it

they dropping it low
she's serving for them
I like what im seeing
they all on the loose
said they haven't felt
quite like this
since they were kids and then

watch the sky
fall down
right now

[OUTRO]
fuck it all
let go

Whoa, captivating and unexpected. I love the concept, I love the beat, I love the performance. I wish the vocal mix was a little less boxy. I also wish the last hook looped a little longer before fading out, but maybe I should be left wanting more...Either way this is a total club banger and would hit anywhere it gets played.

Love the melodic vibes in the sound. Wish the drums and production was more powerful to match the overall feel of the club scene. Vocals need more compression and less reverb throughout. The challenge was nearly met, i was just only I didn't get the Club feel out of this track. Good work though.

Didn't expect to come into this Round leaving with a song that made me homesick for a time and place I can no longer return to... how dare you. I think the hook here may be the strongest this round. Short, sweet, powerful. The beat alone could carry me through the night, I don't ever want to stop dancing to this bop.

That hook is what you sing to that special someone you met at the club and don’t wanna leave without a connection. The beat is entertaining, that cadence switch at 2:10 is cool. Love how the production goes down different vibes but finds a way to circle to the introspective melody of the intro. Vocal mix could be a bit better in terms of volume normalization. Vocal performance is good. Song is well written, flow stays in a good pocket. Think the fuck it all let go chant at the end could be better executed, but otherwise, solid work.

God this is so dreamy with beautiful abandon, I simply love it. I like the existential takes on the club. This kind of lives in on the other side of Obvious Corruption's track. Optimistic instead of nihilistic. I love the moments when the chorus is overlaid with rapped vocals. I can tell this isn't Art's usual genre but he does a great job adapting his style and gifting his own touch onto a dance track. He manages to make the club heady and full of visual descriptions - leave it to nerdcore to make music like this. Crow, I love the halftime moments, buildups, and that synth stab section that comes on at 3:19, all of it is weaved expertly with that ethereal, eternal, floating chorus. And the guitar at 3:33 is so bouncy and fun.
