Vocalist's challenge writeup

This is a dance song about a Book Club where reading a page is like taking a shot of liquor. Double entendres: Pull up to the front and go undercover is referring to entering a club or opening a book. Cracking spines like sexy dancing or opening a book. Sparking highlighters and doing lines. Referring to doing drugs or making notations in a book. Sharing titled labels of either alcohol bottles or books. Critically analyzing bodies of people or written works. Readers digest either food, drink or writing. Bindings intense like human dress or a book cover.

Producer's challenge writeup

This song is just under three minutes of everything ear-candy you could hope for, crammed into a frenetic club banger. It has, of course, the requisite two drops, with the second one switching things up as required. It also has short beat dropouts to let the vocals land for certain lines, risers and tension-building elements, call-and-response basslines (and many variations of those), false drop, DJ-friendly intro and outro, vocal chops leading into the verses plus one used as a melodic element in the drop...and much more. Try it. One spin won't be enough -- this one's gonna make you come back for more.

Lyrics
(We reading pages. Pages)

Verse 1:
Let's pull up to the front
We're going undercover
In 30 days book clubbing
Like star crossed lovers
Get naughty cracking spines
Cause the cadence is divine
Spark the highlighters, baby
On the tables doing lines

Sharing tilted labels
Gather on the moon phases
A seance of corpora
Invoke imaginations
Fantastical worlds
Graphic literatures
Analyzing bodies
On critical terms

Chorus:
Show me the story that you wanna read
That you wanna read
Won't you come with me
Show me the story that you wanna read
That you wanna read

Drop:
We reading pages
We reading pages
Contextual debating
Reading pages and pages
We reading
Pages and pages
The club is conversating
Reading pages and pages
We reading
Contextual debating reading
Pages and pages

Verse 2:
Set a timer 10 minutes
To indulge in gossip
Then we scroll on quick
Cause we got plots thickNext meeting: pot luck
Text readers digest
We leaving awe struck
At an author's finest

Groove to paragraphs
Use our larynx
kinky for thinking
Of bindings intense
Participating members
Capitulate the letters
Bonding over questions
Dónde biblioteca?

Chorus:
Show me the story that you wanna read
That you wanna read
Won't you come with me
Show me the story that you wanna read
That you wanna read
Show me the story that you wanna read
That you wanna read
Won't you come with me
Show me the story that you wanna read
That you wanna read

JUDGES' BREAKDOWN

Oh Flexstyle, you finally made something to justify your claim of being one of the best producers in the competition. ;) It could be that this is just closer to the type of music I like, but you're really flexing your chops here. See what I did there? I really like the synthetic textures of this beat. Like those metallic synth stabs. It's an interestig choice because books are some of the most organic objects in existence. Really fun uplifting chorus. Michael is doing almost as good a job here with the book/party/drugs bars, as Imp with the TCG/drugs bars. You did both achieve the challenge of creating a club banger with live elements; the only reason I took a point off the challenge is that I feel like the genre chosen to celebrate the book club is slightly incongruous to the nature of a book club. No I'm not expecting a quiet library bop, but this is quite high energy and it's hard to imagine bookworms turning up this much. Still, as a standalone club track, it's great.

This is most definitely what I call understanding the assignments. Clean vocals, production is punchy and spacious, and great transitions. No Notes here. awesome!

Vocals are CRISPY. This teams vocal mixing/EQ continues to be stellar. Maybe the sung melody in the refrain could be a bit more pronounced. Beat ain’t nothing to sneeze at either. Very well done on the audio. Vocalists energy complements the beat well. Hook is catchy. I could write pages on pages about how well executed this is.

Book club! Great concept, and I like where you took it. This feels super clubby. The hook is super catchy but a bit muffled. The transitions and break all feel great. Love the speedups and slowdowns. This is just a solid Bass Music track all around.

Booktok's new theme? More likely than you think! This might be my personal favorite for R4. I have a little bias, my partner is a big reader and collector of books, and we both listened to this one again and again. No notes, pass me a tome; let's crack one and vibe.
