The Inbetween
Vocalist's challenge writeup
- The write-up Welcome to The Inbetween: The liminal club. It's empty. You don't know how you got here or why. Double Entendre: We're in the middle of the Inbetween like the W in "between" References: "Rooms in the back if you know what I mean" alluding to popular liminal horror property "The Backrooms" "Wherever we are now Slow floating under the stars now It’s okay to be uncertain, Cause I'm certain that it's fine" Lyrics from "Wherever We are Now" from the cassette beasts soundtrack (song fits the liminal theme) "Gaze into your shadows eyes and say thou art I" An smt Persona reference, which itself is a reference to Carl Jung shadow work stuff, which relates to liminality. "Cross roads untraveled" Hekate's crossroads is a liminal space "The storm, cold inside the warm" I'm here to tell you Dio's "Last in Line" is liminal in its theme.
Producer's challenge writeup
There are three drops in the song (1) before the second drop there’s a dramatic pause (2) the third buildup is a fake out (3) into a section that is lower energy before the last drop (4). The bass switches between the drop and the rest of the song (5). (Also there’s a big chant in the drop, but that was more a vocalist choice so I’m only half counting it (and there are a number of others decision I made but there's a lot of overlap in the example ideas so I only listed 5)) Pockets; verse is in half time, pre chorus is just a snare roll, drop is in full time with hats that move into triplets, bridge part 1 is full time which a four on the floor kick, but juxtaposes a 3:2 polyrhythm using the bass. Low energy cuts to just the hats.
Lyrics
Don't know what the noise or the signal is now we'll maybe take a minute just to figure it out There's no rocks to be kicking around cause That really ain't what this place about no Don't look scared, just consider it fine We only here for a limited time I'm not here and neither are you We're passing through Noones around Welcome to The Inbetween Got room in the back if you know what I mean Wherever we are now Slow floating under the stars now It’s okay to be uncertain, Cause I'm certain that it's fine To be out here lost in time It's uncertain by design Hold fast forward pause rewind Let it slow down let it flow out of your conscious mind Gaze into shadow's eye and say thou art I The stage no one on it, the floor got no one in it We're moving to the next stage of our lives Grab your cups and we'll fill em up with NOTHING The backroom is fully stocked with NOTHING I don't remember where I put my NOTHING We've still got NOTHING This is not NOTHING It's calm before the storm the cold inside the warm It's that Formless aimless forced reflection Find your needs and then collect them Toss aside the things that hold you back and relax Into the still tide where you reside now. It's facts That you've been run ragged Who you were is being unraveled Best you get prepared Don't just sit and stare Pack it up and cross roads untraveled. You feel like you've been pulled apart. You won't have answers to the questions right when you press start no It's not about the journey or the destination now We can move forward and I'll show you how It's no arrival, it's no departure we're between it, we're in transit so Crank the silence loud Chorus We're in the middle of the inbetween like the W in between We're the flash you on your tv screen There no dust cause the slates so clean
JUDGES' BREAKDOWN

9.67/10 score rank #4 of 21VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 10CHALLENGE 10Backrooms club anthem. Such a high concept was executed on an equally high level. Well done incorporating all the liminal references. Love the chopped up celeste-esque bell synth, almost makes it sound like dial up internet, punctuating the old school 90’s backrooms theme. 2:05 We're in the middle of the inbetween like the W in between <— I am in love with this breakdown moment, this bar and the beat behind it! I like the arrangement and the tasteful transitions between quiet, existential, minimalist moments and high explosive energy.

9.33/10 score rank #7 of 21VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 9CHALLENGE 10Nothing! Hook is catchy, love the call and response here. Vocal performance is great, loving the flow and the energy. The beat is dope too, stays entertaining throughout. Vocals could use a bit of de-essing at certain points.

10.00/10 score rank #1 of 21VOCALS 10PRODUCTION 10CHALLENGE 10Ooh, okay this is a cool approach. I haven't noticed anyone start so small yet. I REALLY enjoy to oscillation back and forth between trip-hop and UK garage/jump-up (am I getting that right?). The techno break is also very fun. I appreciate how many clear visions y'all had and executed. The jump between them always feel like an "oh shit!" moment and not "the fuck just happened?" which is a fine line to walk when you swing this far from one section to the next. Very liminal of you. Love this. Such a meta concept, this is so well done. And I thought Club+ was meta...

8.00/10 score rank #10 of 21VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 8Liminal Space club is terrifying, why would you do this to the world? This is basically Purgatory the song, so thanks for unleashing that on R4. I had a hard time placing the opening 12 seconds, it seemed an unnecessary transition and didn't match the vibe of the rest of the song. Still, it's an overall strong contender this round!

8.00/10 score rank #11 of 21VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 10This was dope! i dig the distortion on the vocals! the only comments i have really on the production is i wish there were some transition fills to lead to each portion instead of just empty space in the beginning. I did like the final "did you figure it out" transition. rap vocals were solid, could use a little more love in volume. Got the challenge nailed so great work!
