Foxhound Fucks (feat. Bandit the ill Alchemist, Ish1da, Joey Z64, Pinky and Clementine, Mike Bananas)
Vocalist's challenge writeup
Featuring Guest Vocal Artists: Bandit the ill Alchemist, Ish1da, Joey Z64, Pinky and Clementine, Mike Bananas. Seeing our group's vocalist challenge, there were so many video games and characters therein that sprung to mind to use as rap-fodder. But then we rolled a 5 for Collaboration…The challenge suggests we have to rap from a character’s perspective but not every person has to be the same character so with that in mind, I supposed the best 6 person team I could imagine were the bosses on Metal Gear Solid 1 (minus the octopus boss that didn't really feature). Having a British accent, being the final boss and the leader of the squad; Liquid Snake was the obvious choice for me. Obsessed with ‘genetics defining his destiny’, being the better brother of the two clones (solid/liquid snake) and having a superiority complex/an all mighty chip on his shoulder for having inferior genetics to Solid, it gave me plenty to rap about in the final 50-second slot of this Ruff Ryder style boss rush anthem. Layered with content showing all he believes in containing the odd snake metaphor to boot, I believe I conjured his perspective according to the challenge on the awesome 7-4 beat DJ Hegadrive provided. I obviously gave guidance to the other vocalists on this track too. And I really believe as rappers with different styles and flows we perfectly represent this eclectic, ragtag military outfit that is Fox Hound in Metal Gear Solid 1 (PS1).
Producer's challenge writeup
As we were given the combination of favourite video game character and five additional collaborations, looking from the Metal Gear Solid bosses’ perspectives worked well. For the music, I sampled each of the bosses’ themes to create a beat for each. Some additional samples are the Konami intro music, which appears on the Liquid Snake theme and the intro music of the game, which is used on the intro of the song. My challenge was to use anything but 4/4, which was initially quite daunting for me, because I’d never made beats outside of this time signature. Some of the original samples were in 3/3, which influenced the time signature I chose, but others required a bit more creativity. Here’s a breakdown of each sequence: Intro: 3/4 Revolver Ocelot: 7/4 | theme sample: main synth sound Grey Fox: 6/8 | theme sample: tribal drums Psycho Mantis: 7/4 | theme sample: main synth sound Sniper Wolf: 7/4 | theme sample: piano and background synths Vulcan Raven: 6/8 | theme sample: electric guitar sounding element Liquid Snake: 7/4 | theme sample: background drum fill I took inspiration for the intro from Gang Starr - ‘The ? Remainz’, providing a hip hop style that’s off-kilter. In between each different boss, I used vocal samples taken directly from the game, mainly from the Colonel, who briefs Snake on each of the characters he is to encounter. This provided a short introduction to each character (the track was already long enough!). Of course, the only way to end the track is with one of the iconic game-over-jingles. Major thanks to all our collaborators for fully embracing their characters and the challenge!

9.00/10 score rank #18 of 24VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 9CHALLENGE 10Fuck yeah MGS. Diamond Dogs rule. Love that everyone got their own boss battle theme music for each of their features! * All teams receive a '10' in their challenge category from me this round. This has to be one of the most randomized challenges and can seem insurmountable with the wrong pairing. As such, I am thoroughly impressed with everyone's ability to rise to the task.

9.00/10 score rank #12 of 24VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10This is dope! These time signatures were well done, that last one in particular. Just when you thought it was 4/4. nope!Love how there's just so much variety here in terms of beats, with interludes that help these differences feel seamless. Could benefit from a polish pass re: vocal mix/FX in a few spots. Red Sea up in (Shadow) Moses... clever. Great work all around on this!

7.67/10 score rank #19 of 24VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 9Oh no, time signatures! Alright you got this. 3/4 is clean. Okay, the 7/4 feels double speed like 7/8 since the downbeat comes back around after seven 8th beats...or like a 3.5/4 since you already established a quarter note pulse, but LET'S NOT GET INTO TIME SIG SEMANTHEMATIICS. More importantly, the flow is there. You're riding this very nicely. It feels natural and you sound comfortable. Okay, Joey's verse is what I would expect for 7/4 at this tempo lol. I wish Joey was a little louder, they feel *just* noticeable quieter than Ish sounded in their preceding verse. Okay, Pinky's verse is def 7/4, but this is a super deceptive bassline. surrounding the downbeat with the root, but landed on a fifth on the downbeat. I can see why Pinky went with more of a spoken word vibe. Which is kind of a bummer, because other than the bassline not quite guiding the listener's ear to an already difficult to find downbeat, this is the best beat of the song imo. I would have loved to hear the bassline cleaned up so this dope-ass abstract groove could get wall-to-wall plastered with bars. Okay, why does the Vulcan Raven verse approaching sound like the Grapes of Wrath driving up the road in Veggietales? I lowkey have that busted car percussion break in my breaks folder lmao. Okay, so Mike's verse also feels like 3/4 to me. 6/8 is usually two groups of three with a downbeat and a backbeat started off every other group (think "We Are The Champions" by Queen or "Chopstlevania feat. Red Cloud" by Heath McNease for a rap example). 3/4 has this more "one two three" waltzy feel with three steady pulses per bar. Closing bar in clear 7/4, huzzah! Everyone really handles these awkward time sigs in successful ways. No one was really tripping over themselves are attempting something they didn't quite accomplish. I wish I knew more about the MSG universe, but not enough to actually change that. I did really enjoy the Big Shaq reference.

8.33/10 score rank #16 of 24VOCALS 7PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10Great execution of a difficult challenge. Great idea to take the video game prompt and apply it to 6 people using the Fox Hound container. The time signature changes and the video game samples make it feel like each section is a different song, I'm not sure if this would've been more effective/cohesive if the verses were shorter and the time signature stayed 1 consistent one that is easy to rap to (i.e. 6/8)? Nevertheless I completely recognize the difficulty of odd time signatures on both the production and rapping side. I feel like the effectiveness of rapping in 7/4 was mixed; everyone tried to ride the beat to mixed success. Challenge still met, though!

7.33/10 score rank #23 of 24VOCALS 6PRODUCTION 6CHALLENGE 10Good submission. I hear there were a few issues with the vocal mixes of the verses overall. adlibs were as loud as the main vocals which it can sound too compressed in the track. beat switches were pretty cool, just needed to keep the vocals at the same consistent level throughout the entire song. Overall solid track but wanted a little more in the instrumentals when it came to the drums and percussions mix wise. good work!
