What's the Difference Between Chili Stews-(feat. Huge Euge, AJB, Joey Z64, Kyle Vice)
Vocalist's challenge writeup
The superior chili in Ohio is called Skyline (named for the beautiful skyline of the city, Cincinnati, pictured in our album art). We actually have recipe cards for “Ohio Chili” that we hand out at Huge Euge shows that is really just an at home recipe for Skyline Chili (so obviously we had to feature Humongous Eugene). Skyline is a sweet chili with no beans that goes great on spaghetti with cheese (called a three way) or on a hot dog with cheese (called on coney). As for Joey Z, well we vowed to collaborate on a track back in round three, and per Joey Z’s MO there was only critical feedback to be had, therefore we have our lone Skyline dissenter. The song calls out gross canned chili like STAGG, Wolf Brand, Hormel, and Campbell’s. Several shots are fired at Gold Star Chili as well, which is another Cincinnati chili restaurant that is a rival to Skyline (except their chili sucks). Shoutout to Nick at the Polaris Skyline for making us some dope coney dogs to eat in the studio.
Producer's challenge writeup
With a prompt like “The Al Yankovic”, we had no choice but to go all in. Rather than simply featuring the accordion, we went full parody and decided to rebuild “What’s The Difference” by Dr. Dre into a polka-ish song about Skyline Chili. Featuring multiple accordion parts, primarily to replace the lead trombone sound, this track fills in the original production a bit more and is, if we do say ourselves… a bit spicy.
Lyrics
What's the difference between chili stews? What's the difference between chili stews? Back when Ax was rolling with garbanzo in a Benzo I was taking all the beans out of my chili, keep it simple, Got my cumin and my chili powder, salt to taste, And I’m even throwing in some onion garlic powder paste But that’s where it’s crazy 'cause here in Ohio, We add some things that make our chili, uhh, Ohio, Talking cinnamon, allspice, and everything nice, Sugar and cocoa, then we mix it up with diced Onions, tomato and Worcestershire sauce, Apple cider vinegar and beef or veggie broth, You can cook it with beans or even fake meat, But Ohioans prefer it with some lean ground beef Feeling good and hungry, it’s Skyline time! I love it so much that I wrote this rhyme, It’s by far the better chili when compared to Gold Star, Taking out the competition like Trini Kwan to Goldar People say I rap too much about food, Why the fuck do you think that they call me Huge Euge? Julie from Kenwood is my favorite coney artist, I’m here to say that Skyline goes the hardest (Chorus) What's the difference between chili stews? You make a good batch, but you don’t do what you supposed to do, I add some cinnamon and put it in to make it better, I'm used to chili hot dog style with stacked cheddar, What's the difference between chili stews? You make a good batch, but you don’t do what you supposed to do, I add some cinnamon and put it in to make it better, I'm used to chili hot dog style with stacked cheddar My chili doesn’t come from a can, it starts with onions, I cut ‘em then sauté in a pan, I know they’re done when My produce is translucent, I’ve produced a taste improvement, And my recipe is based upon a whole entire movement See that Skyline floating in your eyeline? We’re making potent potions, and I’m hoping that you buy mine, A rivalry as old as Cain and Abel, So, grab a bowl and a spoon, and make yourself a seat at the table No, I’m not going STAGG, I’m not a lone Wolf, Hormel can go to hell, Campbell’s clearly can’t cook, I bring the cocoa for kicking it up un poco, The locals are looking loco, you should be rocking a spice rack Ohio is a battleground for chili, I’ve deduced We’re giving Gold Stars for mediocre meat juice, Maybe I’m indoctrinated, maybe I’m just petty, But I’m only putting Skyline on my hot dog and spaghetti, that’s the difference Chorus Yo, turn my heat up, you need to brown that motherfucking beef, dawg, Cut your onions up, chuck 'em in with the meat wad, Get it hot enough to melt your fucking teeth off, Dish it out, get everybody yelling “yeehaw!” Get your green peppers out and dice 'em up, Put some garlic with your spice, shit goes nice as fuck, Midas touch, trying something new on every batch, I ain’t lying, try a bite and try to tell me what it lacks, dawg, you can’t Your chili’s all sweet and runny (what the fuck?), My chili verde, same color as my money, I pour some beer in it, squeeze in a little honey, Ain’t it funny how it started with some humble beef and onion? You want to thicken up your pot? That’s the easy part, Crush up your beans and your tomatillos, release the starch, Now rip a corn tortilla up into teeny parts, And throw it in that chili while it’s boiling, that’s the secret art Never had a Skyline chili, it sounds weird, Ask the city, they say, “We don’t eat that shit out here,” Like I fuck with chili dogs, I can rock with fake spaghetti, But Cincinnati pissed me off, I was maybe there for a second So, you jabrons step away from the stove quickly, If you give me like a minute and some seasoning to fix it, Then I promise you, I’ll probably really change your disposition, Or maybe chili is chili is chili is chili, there’s no difference Chorus What’s the difference between chili stews?

9.00/10 score rank #8 of 24VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10Aw man, I was waiting for a "What's the difference between us? We can start with the penis, or we can scream, "I just don't give a fuck" and see who means it" - chili version! I mean taken at face value it's a millennial cringe food parody of the classic 90s hip hop track "What's The Difference" - but THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WEIRD AL DOES! Y'all really leaned in. Plus it's so well-executed. (That chorus is tight, nice job AJB!) I want to commend all three vocalists for committing to a goofy premise with real theatrical delivery. It kept me engaged and was very fun to listen to. I also learned so much about niche regional chili lore! This might be my favorite of Joey's feature verses of all of songs they guested on. "Yo, turn my heat up, you need to brown that motherfucking beef, dawg" made me smile. Challenge met! I feel you met the Sanjh challenge in the best way possible. My only critique is that the original beat had many arrangement shifts due to the repetitive nature of the sample to keep things interesting, and I feel like Kyle could have taken more opportunities to switch up the beat and arrangement (drop out / switch out instruments or drums) and keep the song feeling varied and alive. It has been an absolute joy discovering the magic of Mechanical Peasants. What I love about the VPC is discovering artists I have been sleeping on for too long. AJB has quickly climbed the ranks as one of my fav vocalists in the community. And I'm looking forward to meeting Kyle for the first time in Cbus soon!

8.67/10 score rank #10 of 24VOCALS 10PRODUCTION 7CHALLENGE 9Ah, this is a song about chilies, not chiles. That's fine lol. I love an anthem for a regional dish, and an homage to a classic posse cut is always fun. I also enjoy rapped recipes, and Joey brought the heat on this feature. Euge and everyone else showed out as well, this was a great crew to gather together for this song. I'm sorry I can't pick out everyone's voice by ear! The beat is solid and definitely features accordion prominently, but I'd love to hear a little less loopiness and a little more parts that feel like they're listening and responding to each other in interesting ways. sometimes just playing a looped part the whole song through (even if you clean it up hella afterwards) can really breathe some natural human variation into the part. The mix is clean and the balance feels fine. That burp at the end is so much louder than the rest of the song lol

9.33/10 score rank #10 of 24VOCALS 8PRODUCTION 10CHALLENGE 10This is insane and hits me deeply on so many fronts. I can't get into the story in these notes but I have friends from Ohio, I'm very familiar with Skyline. I'm no stranger to a cinnamon addition, and I consider myself a big fan of a damn good chili. If y'all find yourself at MAGStock one year, you should enter the competition so I can judge you all over again. The term chili stew was a thing I thought my best friend and I came up with in school, and I love seeing it as a concept outside of our own brains and featured as a track plot point. Small world shit. * All teams receive a '10' in their challenge category from me this round. This has to be one of the most randomized challenges and can seem insurmountable with the wrong pairing. As such, I am thoroughly impressed with everyone's ability to rise to the task.

9.00/10 score rank #12 of 24VOCALS 9PRODUCTION 8CHALLENGE 10Accordion dr dre, I respect that lol. Beat is cool, that hook is Fuego. Same with the verses. Maybe the instrumentation in the beat can be a bit more dynamic. Them verses are heat tho, lemme go make some chili.
