Metamorphosis (feat. Imp, Slippy Thumbsticks, Sabre, Joey Z64, Shawn Solo Beats, Flexstyle, Jester Rudely)

Open audio
Vocalist's challenge writeup

I met the challenge by reading the wikipedia article for “Metamorphosis” in bugs. I had the joy of composing much of the instrumentation in the A(phid) section, but got a funny little sense after writing the “not to be confused with the text by kafka” and the double metamorphosis song came to life. With Dave’s masterful followup chord wise into the B(ee) section we knew we had something super fun and transformative. Thank you to Imp, Slippy Thumbsticks for verses! Thank you to Sabre (formerly known as Diabolical Drizz) for their Trumpet Playing, JoeyZ for their LUSH keys, Shawn Solo Beats for lending us his solo beat, Flexstyle for flexing some dirty lead, and my Smart and Sexy Girlfriend Jester Rudely for her wonderful monologue.

Producer's challenge writeup

Pinky took the lead on composing the first half of the song, set in a very hopeful major key, which I then followed up with a complimentary minor section. Musically we both kept on theme of bugs and metamorphosis, so sounds are made to either sound bug-like, or even straight up samples of bugs (the bass for the end section is sampled from an actual cicada). While arranging and mixing everything I wanted the song to fit the feeling of the bug's lifecycle, starting with a small simple production that grows as it reaches the end of each phase of its life, before becoming something more.

Lyrics
Metamorphosis

[Intro hype]
Are you hungry for change?
Do you find it impossible to stay the same?

[Hook]
Butterfly in the sky
What did you do to get so high?
Butterfly in the sky
What did you do to get so high?
Little butterfly Little butterfly
Butterfly in the sky
How did you get so high?

[Verse]
Hemimetabolic
I’m a pretty YOUNG NYMPH
Each phase of stadium I grow my exoskeleton
I’m a Dragonfly, Cockroach, Cricket, Termite
Cicada, Stick bug, Aphid, Mayfly!
ASK ME ONCE MORE HOW I GOT SO FLY

[IMP VERSE]
Metamorphosis starts with an egg
Hatch into bugs knowing nothing's a friend
Poor guy, larva eat everything, growing in size
Like you during puberty, it's loathing it's life

Goes inside of pupas, liquified inside
Killing time til solid, definitive in size
As adults, got memories of their childhoods
Might be in need of therapy and adult guidebooks

[Hook + Verse]
Holometaboly
I’ll think I’ll be a couple things
I’ll be a Larva then a Pupa, Glow up and spread my wings
I’ll be a Beetle, Lacewing, Flea or sawfly
Butterfly, Bee, or a Twisted-winged parasite!
ASK ME ONCE MORE HOW I GOT SO FLY

[Transitional Verse - Pinky]
Morphe like “form” Meta like “after”
Not to be confused with the text by Kafka
Don’t be afraid young nymph or little larvae
Perfectly normal Biological Process

This beat is Holometabolous
That means “Complete Metamorphosis”
It’s gonna go where it’s never been
Complete Metamorphosis

very cool and solid song. There were a few vocalists that sounded a little rushed in their delivery of the verses. Just have to take your time recording. I was just a little confused on some portions of where the hook begins and ends at some points. the second part of the track really pulls it all together overall which bumps up the score. good submission.

Second part was way more compelling than the first part. When Slippy busts in with the Kafka bars, that hoe went STUPID. I can feel the bug and "transformation" motifs throughout the vocals and production. The cicada effect in the first half and the fluttering wing-like saw bass in the second half specifically. That final synth solo by Flexstyle is so beautiful and dark. Paired up with Sabre's trumpet, that whole section really conjures up an image of a metamorphosis gone wrong and the resulting adult bug turning out so much more evil and twisted, but it's too late, it's left the chrysalis and it's flown off into the distance... Imp's verse seemed out of place both timing-wise and doesn't feel like it fits in with the rest of the song. Pinky has grown a lot as a rapper and singer, but I think they hit their optimal balance in Round 4 and this one had more mixed results. I'm taking points off the challenge because - and this is going to be a real stickler comment - that first half is not in a major key. The main riff only uses 1 and 5, which isn't enough to define the key as major (you need the major third). And Pinky is singing notes that belong to the minor scale of that key. I know what you were going for though, and the rest of the challenge was met. This team had possibly the biggest glowup of the whole competition and crafted one of the catchiest tracks out of all the rounds, Club Cupcake. It's been a total treat getting to know you two creative powerhouses and I hope you each continue to make a lot more music I can consume - and selfishly hope that I get to collaborate with both of you!

First half: I can see myself vibing as the DJ plays this song in Elsewhere in Brooklyn, tequila in hand, sweat down my back. Second half: holy shit, this my kinda dark trap right here. Could use some polish on the vocal mix on the second part. The swagger on the vocalists here is great, particularly the sangin, it's a vibe. Few spots where the flow could be tightend up, but overall this is fire.

Was really hoping to see a Gregor Samsa reference in this song and I was not at ALL disappointed. Those keys at the end breakdown too OOH what a little ripper of a track. I fuck with this one y'all. * All teams receive a '10' in their challenge category from me this round. This has to be one of the most randomized challenges and can seem insurmountable with the wrong pairing. As such, I am thoroughly impressed with everyone's ability to rise to the task.

I think Imp's vocals got placed a little early on the beat. A hazard of remote collabs! But it happens. It's good praxis to request a reference mixdown from collaborators so you can line them up to the tick without having to guess by ear. Now THIS is modal interchange! A well executed major to minor key change. This is a vibe. I love the choice of wikipedia page. I love a creative approach.
